Maths is Collaborative

Mathematics is internationally collaborative, and so the ICM should be internationally collaborative. As such, we are proud to present the first multi-country bid, with the General Assembly in Dublin, and the ICM itself within the SEC facility in Glasgow.

People Make Mathematics

The overarching principle of our bid is that participants are always more important than the host. Participants need to collaborate, and so we have created a 2km congress model to enable this, by minimising dispersal.

Collaborate, Don’t Commute

Our hotels, bespoke conference facilities and our many casual venues are all within easy walking distance, and so participants can spend their time collaborating, not commuting. Also within our 2km radius is a wide range of parks, restaurants and cafés, which together with long summer days and a pleasant climate will create a very enjoyable and memorable experience.

Affordable City

Within our 2km radius are over 4000 student rooms from $55 per night, and over 10000 hotel rooms from $80 per night. Accommodation is both plentiful and affordable. Travel within the city, and the overall cost of meals and refreshments, is similarly low.

Experienced City

The experienced host of numerous large events from the 2021 United Nations Climate Change Conference COP26 to all the academic conferences with 6000+ participants, Glasgow is a conference city with serious pedigree. As a result, the Glasgow Convention Bureau has been voted by its clients as Best UK Convention Bureau for 19 consecutive years.

Globally Supported Bid

This bid would create the first in-person ICM in Europe since 2006, and in the UK since 1958. It benefits from significant support: our bid has been endorsed by 30+ adhering organisations and societies, and we have agreements to host satellite conferences at many world-leading institutes. We have also partnered with other key organisations, such as EMS Press, and will produce the first-ever fully accessible ICM proceedings.

Developing Countries Fund

The ICM is for mathematicians from all continents. Through our Developing Countries Fund, managed through ICMS Maths for Humanity, we will fully support the attendance of 900 mathematicians from across the globe. We will also run broad networking events during the ICM and additional pre-ICM training events, including a mentorship program which mathematicians new to the ICM can choose to join.

Science Communication

We will use the unique opportunity that the ICM brings to share the beauty and power of mathematics with the whole world, to coordinate a world-wide network of highly influential communicators to produce resources in several languages that will engage children and adults alike. We have already secured governmental commitment to declare 2030 a “Maths Year” in the UK and Ireland.

Globally Connected City

Glasgow is highly globally connected, with three nearby international airports offering direct flights from over 165 destinations and two train stations for sustainable travel within the UK and Europe. As a city, Glasgow benefits from endless cultural experiences to explore, and it forms the gateway to Scotland and the Highlands, which contain some of the world’s most breathtaking scenery.

Sustainability

Glasgow is very highly ranked as a sustainable destination, and the City, the University and the SEC are all implementing plans to make Glasgow fully carbon neutral by 2030. In addition, we will develop metrics and indices that will enable the IMU and other major organisations to more easily assess the sustainability and carbon footprints of future conferences.
